About MBBS in USA

Unlike India where MBBS is studied as a bachelor’s degree MBBS in USA is studied as a postgraduate program. It is equivalent to MD (Doctor of Medicine) and takes roughly 4 years to complete. However, international students are supposed to complete a pre-medical course (BS degree) from a USA university to apply for this degree. After completion of MD, you have to apply for 3-5 years of a residency program to practice as a doctor. The total duration required to pursue MBBS in USA ranges between 7 to 9 years.

How to do it 

To study at a medical college in the USA offering MD degrees, International students have to appear for the MCAT exam. Students can continue to practice and work on their skills as a physician and surgeon of a particular specialization after completing their MBBS at USA.Tuition fees for MBBS in USA for an MD range from between 18,442 USD to 64,984 USD.

A MBBS doctor earns around  $208,000 or more per annum, as stated in the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Report. A medical degree is considered a second degree in the USA, therefore, students are required to attain the first degree, that is, Bachelor of Science (BS) in biology, chemistry, or any other field related to medicine, to apply for Doctor of Medicine (MD)  . Only then can he/she apply in USA. This BS degree is also called as a pre-medical course. After the students have completed their MD, they can apply for a residency program based on their choice of specialization.

 

Pre-Medical Course

This is the course that starts everything. Also known  as the foundation course, Students learn the basics of medical science in this course. USA students start pursuing this course after grade 10th and are required to  study this course for 4 years. However, since Indian students apply for MBBS in USA after grade 12th, they have to study a BS degree only for 4 trimesters or 16 months.

In case someone already has a degree in the medicine-related field or studied MBBS for 1 or 2 years in India, they might not have to enroll in the pre-medical course in the USA. Although, this decision depends on the University too.

Subjects like English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Anatomy, Medical Terminology, and Sociology are taught in pre-medical courses.

MD Program

Completion of the pre medical course makes you eligible to enroll for an MD program which is what MBBS is called in USA. The program is split into two stages and each stage takes 2 years to complete.

Theoretical Stage:

Giving an advanced level of theoretical knowledge about medical science to students is the main goal. Subjects required to study are Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, Medical Ethics, Biochemistry, Neuroanatomy, Pathology, Microbiology, and Clinical Science

To move on to the second stage of the MD degree, Students have to appear for USMLE 1 (United States Medical Licensing Examination).

Practical Stage:

It is also referred to as Clinical Rotation or Externship/Clerkship. Students learn the basics of operating/working in a hospital and treating patients, taught by doctors and professors. At the end of this stage, you are required to apply for USMLE 2.

Residency Program

Students who successfully clear USMLE 2 are eligible to apply for the residency program. Depending upon the specialization chosen, the time period of this program can be between 3 to 5 years.

The final stage

Students have to now work in hospitals and train to become an expert in their respective fields. The one last final exam that they have to give is USMLE 3, also known as Licensee Exam. After passing this exam, students are finally set to practice as a doctor in the USA or in any other country that accepts the US education system.
